While in Powell River, be sure to test out the newly completed Sunshine Coast Trail. Consisting of 180 km (112 mi.) of hiking trails from Sarah Point to Saltery Bay, the Sunshine Coast Trail offers three bed & breakfasts, one hotel, one restaurant, and one hut where hikers can rest their weary bodies before setting off for the next day's adventures. Several campsites are also available. Other hikes in the area include the short Willingdon Beach Trail, and the 13-km (8-mi.) Inland Lake Trail, which is the only wheelchair accessible wilderness trail and campsite in the world. The Powell Forest Canoe Route also attracts outdoors enthusiasts from all over. Paddle your way through lakes, rivers, and creeks that wind past mountain peaks and rich forests, stopping to set up camp each night at one of the 23 recreation sites along the way. Tour the route one weekend at a time, or complete the entire circuit all at once. With 79.7 km (49 mi.) of canoeing, and 10.7 km (6.6 mi.) of portaging, the Powell Forest Canoe Route is a great accomplishment for both the beginner and the experienced canoeist.
Powell River is located on the Sunshine Coast's main highway, Highway 101. BC Ferries sails several times a day between Horseshoe Bay in Vancouver to Gibsons, on the Lower Coast. From Gibson's a drive up to Earl's Cove at the northwesterly tip of the Lower Coast will connect you with the second car-carrying ferry, which will take you to Saltery Bay, a short drive to Powell River. BC Ferries also sails from to Powell River from Little River, on Vancouver Island. Flights from the Vancouver International Airport to the Powell River Municipal Airport are also available.
